  • survivors are immune. disease dies out until a new generation arrives or a mutant organism arises

  • tend to be restricted to humans (don’t have an environmental reservoir)

    • measles, rubella, mumps, pertussis, smallpox

    • environmental reservoirs: influenza in pigs and birds

  • need large populations to support epidemic nuclear chain reactions

  • small populations get diseases with non-human reservoirs
