Anti-Hyperlipidemic Drugs: Fibric acid compounds

on 24.1.09 with 0 comments

Fibric acid compounds (prototype is clofibrate) were studied in the 1950s. These compounds are not very powerful though, the only one that seems to continue to hang around is gemfibrozil, although it is not used as a monotherapy. There is a great risk if a pt is on a statin AND taking gemfibozil as well… skeletal muscle disorders can occur (myalgia, myocitis, and rhabdomyolysis in which muscle begins to break down and there is heme in the urine).
