  • normal flora in the GI tract; this is unique because pretty much every other pathogenic fungus is in the dirt

  • antibiotics can cause overgrowth

  • immunocompromised

    • thrush

    • vulvovaginitis

    • esophagitis


Babies also get thrush

  • as they make a transition from a state with no normal flora to abundant normal flora, sometimes the yeast get ahead of the bacteria. however, these are usually self-limited infections

  • can also cause diaper rashes


Very rare disease: mucocutaneous candidiasis

  • a specific immunodeficiency that is not entirely understood leads to horrible, horrible candida infections of hands and feet as well as thrush
