congenital heart disease is an important cause of pediatric morbidity and mortality
diagnostic methods and surgical corrections have improved dramatically
this means longer survivals, often into reproductive ages
women with CHD are at a greater risk of giving birth to children with CHD
genetic causes are increasingly recognized
prenatal screening of pregnant women with CHD is mandatory
pulmonary hypertension/hypertensive arteriopathy develops in CHD with left-to-right shunts and this requires early intervention. posttricuspid shunts, where systemic pressure is applied to pulmonary microvasculature, will cause irreparable injury and become uncorrectable
