  • foramen ovale: oxygenated blood from ductus venosus bypasses right atrium to go to the left atrium

  • ductus arteriosus: oxygenated blood from right heart passes to pulmonary artery and flows into aorta

  • after birth, these shunts all undergo constriction, obliteration of the lumen, and fibrosis
