OBSTRUCTIVE LESIONS

on 2.9.08 with 0 comments

  • 25% of CHD

  • cyanosis is not present because lack of systemic and pulmonary communication precludes mixing of oxygenated and unoxygenated blood

  • pressure gradient across stenotic/atretic region leads to ventricular hypertrophy as well as “jet lesions” downstream of stenosis due to post-stenotic turbulent flow

  • examples

    • aortic coarctation

    • aortic stenosis; aortic atresia (complete obliteration)

    • hypoplastic left heart syndrome

    • bicuspid aortic valve with stenosis

    • pulmonary valve stenosis/atresia
