  • found abundantly on skin, mucosal surfaces of the upper respiratory tract and the GI tract (particularly the large intestine) and vagina

  • diverse bacterial and yeast species with preponderance of obligately anaerobic bacteria

  • absent in

    • lower respiratory tract (lung parenchyma/alveoli)

    • sterile bodily fluids: blood, CSF, bile, urine, pleural/peritoneal fluid

  • in certain circumstances, normal flora can cause disease

    • lung abscess, endocarditis, abdominal infections
