if you inject mouse with encapsulated (smooth) Pneumococcus, mouse dies
if you inject mouse with nonencapsulated (rough) Pneumococcus, mouse lives
if you inject mouse with heat-killed smooth cells, mouse lives
if you inject mouse with heat-killed smooth cells mixed with living rough cells, mouse dies
upon inspection of this dead mouse, living smooth Pneumococcus is detected; this is a consequence of bacterial transformation
