The famous pneumococcal capsule

  • smooth cells make a glistening capsule; rough cells don’t

  • if you inject mouse with encapsulated (smooth) Pneumococcus, mouse dies

  • if you inject mouse with nonencapsulated (rough) Pneumococcus, mouse lives

  • if you inject mouse with heat-killed smooth cells, mouse lives

  • if you inject mouse with heat-killed smooth cells mixed with living rough cells, mouse dies

  • upon inspection of this dead mouse, living smooth Pneumococcus is detected; this is a consequence of bacterial transformation
