There is considerable evidence that cysteinyl-leukotrienes are produced in asthma and they have potent effects on airway function, inducing bronchoconstriction, airway hyperresponsiveness, plasma exudation, and mucus secretion. Several anti-leukotriene agents have been developed for clinical use; anti-leukotreines include leukotriene receptor antagonists and 5’-lipoxygenase enzyme inhibitors.
