Anti-inflammatory Agents

Anti-inflammatory drugs suppress the inflammatory response by inhibiting components of the inflammation, such as inflammatory cell infiltration and the release, synthesis, and effects of inflammatory mediators.

The characteristic feature of asthma is eosinophilic inflammation of the airways. Thus, factors which promote the accumulation, activation, and survival of eosinophils are relevant and promising targets of therapy. These include the cytokines IL-5, GM-CSF, and IL-3, as well as expression of adhesion molecules specific for eosinophils (VCAM-1, VLA-4). Most of these pathways are inhibited by corticosteroids, which are very effective anti-inflammatory agents. Cysteinyl leukotrienes promote eosinophilic inflammation. Therefore, agents that block the production or activity of cysteinyl leukotrienes are also anti-inflammatory agents.
