Sporothrix schenckii

on 27.8.08 with 0 comments

typical skin infection

  • little finger is involved

  • you will also see areas of induration/swelling going up the lymph node chain to the elbow or axilla

  • this is the syndrome of the alcoholic rose gardener: prick himself on a rose; if he is an alcoholic, infection establishes more easily. the patient has pretty much inocuated the organism into his hand, and the delivery of the pathogen is not via inhalation

Sporothrix colony: mixed black-and-white growth

appearance

  • flower-like structures when you have groups of conidia

  • when it forms the yeast, they are cigar-shaped. they are not actually colored black—that’s just the stain

sporotricosis

  • organism is found in decaying organic matter

  • transmitted via inoculation
