  • solitary nodules are in 5% of the population

  • only 1-2 per 1000 have cancer; diagnosis needs to be confirmed

  • benign: Adenoma, goiters, cysts, thyroiditis

  • suggestive of neoplasm

    • solitary > multiple

    • younger > older

    • males > females

  • palpation and imaging, but most definitive information is fine needle aspiration biopsy and pathologic examination
