solitary nodules are in 5% of the population
only 1-2 per 1000 have cancer; diagnosis needs to be confirmed
benign: Adenoma, goiters, cysts, thyroiditis
suggestive of neoplasm
solitary > multiple
younger > older
males > females
palpation and imaging, but most definitive information is fine needle aspiration biopsy and pathologic examination
