Osteitis fibrosis cystica

  • on rare occasions, hyperparathyroidism may be associated with what looks like a single bone lesion

  • when a radiologist sees this, he thinks it looks like a bone neoplasm, a giant cell tumor of bone

  • but ask about patient’s serum Ca and alkaline phosphatase and you realize that it’s not a neoplasm because both are high

  • this is sometimes referred to as a “brown tumor” of the bone: hemorrhage, hemosiderin deposits in the area of fibrous stroma make the bone look brown

  • distal clavicle, distal phalanges, lamina dura of tooth
