pH of body fluids needs to be maintained within a normal range
pH = -log [H+]
range: 0 <>
range [H+]: 1.0 eq H+ -- 10-14 eq H+
Urine pH can range from
acidic pH = 4.5
basic pH = 8.0
pH of blood must be maintained within a much smaller range
pH compatible with life: 6.8 – 7.8
160 nEq H+ - 16 nEq H+
normal physiological range: 7.35 – 7.45
Disorders
acidosis
when plasma pH <>
[H+] > 40
alkalosis
plasma pH > 7.40
[H+] <>
metabolic disorder
primarily due to change in [bicarb]
norm = 24
range 23-25
respiratory disorder
primarily due to change in PCO2
norm 40 cm H2O
range 35-45
