Incidence of seizures decreases with age
EITIOLOGY differs: more commonly stroke (65%), tumors > degenerative diseases
Partial seizures most common
Incidence of status epilepticus increases by factor of 2 with increased mortality rate (35%)
Changes in pharmacokinetics
Common use of antacids—decrease absorption
TBW decreases with age so half-life decreases
Decreased albumin due to decreased protein synthesis
Decreased GFR, creatinine clearance
decreased muscle with more fat
decreased liver volume with reduced perfusion
lower metabolic activity
