Mechanical valves can have a blender effect on RBC's, and unless this occurs to a great extent the body's bone marrow can compensate.

With a severely dysfunctional valve, a problem with hemolytic valve can become a problem.


The incidence of different problems with bioprosthetic v.s. mechanical valves:


  • Paravalvular leaks
  • endocarditis
  • degeneration
  • thrombosis
