Microvascular – 1.) retinopathy; 2.) neuropathy; 3.) nephropathy
Macrovascular – hyperlipidemia, coagulation abnormalities, HTN, smoking increase the risk of atherosclerotic disease in diabetic patients.
Tracking the disease long-term best accomplished by HgB A1C levels: 7 is about glucose 150s, 8 = 180s, 9 = 210s, 10 = 240s. This reflects the increased glycosylation of the hemoglobin molecule.
