Anti-Hyperlipidemic Drugs: Cholestyramine

on 24.2.08 with 0 comments

Bile acid groups can attach to bile acids (negatively charged). Cholestyramine is the prototype. People may have to take as much as 20 grams of this stuff for effectiveness, and it is very grainy. Pt’s can mix it with orange juice, etc. But many patients end up reducing their dosages because of the bad taste, so patient compliance is not very good. Also, side effects include bloating and excessive flatulence, so you won’t see too many patients on cholestyramine or colestipol (another bile acid).
