- Estimation of the age of the newly born e.g. at the tips of the fingers at the end of the 8th month while beyond the tip of the fingers & at the end of the toes at full term.
- Sex determination e.g. from nail polish in females
- Occupation and social state: from the degree of cleanness and certain dyes.
- Help in suspecting the cause of death e.g. dark blue in asphyxia, red in CO or cyanide poisoning, pale in hemorrhage. Some poisons are deposited in nails e.g. chronic arsenical poisoning.
- Personal identification of the assailant from blood or epithelial cells under nails of the victim.
