Your decision which AB to Rx for tx must be based on the in vitro effects of that agent against the specific infection you are trying to get rid of. Aminopenicillins (including Amox, and other synthetics) require a relatively high minimal inhibitory concentration to kill pseudomonas aeruginosa, while Cephalosporins and Fluoroquinolones require much lesser concentrations to be effective against enterobacteriaceae as compared to other ABs.
Incidentally, the Fluoroquinolone class includes Cipro, the highly publicized AB that is recommended against Anthrax. It turns out that tetracycline is just as effective against anthrax for much less money because its available generically.
