if the infection is in an area of bone above the insertion of a joint capsule, the infection can get into the joint capsule and this may lead to septic arthritis on top of osteomyelitis
on the other hand, if the joint space doesn’t overlap with the infection, periosteum itself reacts to infection
this new bone is termed involucrum, and fortunately we don’t see this happen very often
if the infection is limited to the area, abscess and local bone formation may result. dead bone may fall off, too; this is called sequestrum
